Mexican-How to figure out what figures is in the bag without opening it
Since the bags are opaque (meaning you can't see the contents without damaging or altering the bag), you cannot see what is inside the bag at first glance. Instead, there is two methods to figure out what is inside the bag without opening it.
The feeling method. This method will require some skill. The way to do this is to physically feel the bag for a signature part that comes with the figure. For example, if you feel a bumpy, round object you will know that you have a clown in the bag.
The Bar code method. This will require you to have a list with you of all the figures. Each bag has a bar code that signifies which figure is in the bag. The bar codes are different for each country. Here is a guide by Bricks.inof.de and Brickset:
There's still some uncertainty as to which countries the information presented relates to, but my guess is that there will be two types of packaging: North American and everywhere else. The NA packets will have barcodes on the right, as shown on the Eurobricks picture, and everywhere else will have them on the left. The information at the link above is for left-barcoded packets.
These are the barcodes of the new collectible minifigures, available since May 2010. When you look at the back side of the bag, the important barcode is the smaller one (without digits beneath). Unfortunately there are at least two kinds of such minifigure bags which differ in layout and barcodes:
- Item: 4559116 (Europe, barcodes on the left)
- Item: 4568039 (US, barcodes on the right)
The barcodes presented here are valid only for the bags mentioned first. These are being sold in Europe. The others where found in the USA; unfortunately those have different barcodes.
Please print the PDF file in its original size (100%) on A4 paper, so the barcodes will appear the same size as on the bags, so they can be compared easily. In order to make this even easier, the barcodes in the second file ("-b") are visually ordered by the width and arrangement of the bars.
These PDF files are intended to be helpful for people who don't have a camera phone with barcode software, but still would like to get the desired minifigure or avoid duplicate minifigures.
There's no warranty of any kind for the information provided. It is recommended to verify the identity of the minifigure by feeling the shape of it through the bag.

Last but certainly not least, the collectable minifigs were on display: both series one and two. They are just so awesome and series two has just as many very cool figs as series one. Nearly every one features something unique be it a printed torso or an accessory which hasn't been available before and (I'm told) won't be used elsewhere. I learned some other facts about them: They will cost £1.99 in the UK. The yellow outer box will contain 60 minifigs. Some will be rarer than others. They won't be available in newsagents like WHS but from normal stockists. Series one will be out around May and series two in September-ish, so that gives us a reasonable time to collect them all. You can't really tell what's in the bag by feeling them as they are quite stiff. And, as the title of this article suggests, the cheerleader has a nice pair of pom-poms
The Swedish LEGO blog legobloggen has an interesting bit of news about a collectable series of minifigs to be available next year:
"In June 2010, Lego will launch a new collectors series with only minifigs. The figures will be of various types, but is reportedly not being those from current themes. They could be anything from cowboys to ninjas or adventurers, etc. The first wave will appear in stores in June, reportedly contain 16 different characters. These will then be replaced by 16 other figures in August.
"Figures will be sold in opaque polybags, so it is chance that determines which figure you get. This is the same approach as in the example trading cards. The bag with the figure will cost 25 SEK. May seem much given to impulse setter costs only £ 5 more and then there is also the accessories. But I suspect that the high price is because the characters will be unique to this collector series and that they will only be produced in two months (at least the first wave)." This is very interesting, but I don't like the idea of them being in opaque bags!
Update: Grahamh_100 found this page on the LEGOLand Windsor site (try this link to the image on flickr if it doesn't work for you) which shows designs for 16 collectable badges which feature images of minifigs. They could be the first 16 collectable figures, and certainly some of the designs are the same as those seen in the Brickjournal article about new LEGO business cards. If so they will be very cool: my favourites are the cheerleader, clown and zombie!
Update 2: We're seeing information from a number of sources that suggest each bag will contain a selection of parts from across the range of the 16 figures, and not a specific figure as had previously been supposed. So a single bag you buy might contain the Clown's hair, the Zombie's head, the Robot's body, and the Cheerleader's legs.
Update 3: While the controversy over these figs continues, Brick Journal has unearthed some further Lego business card designs, this time showing the Cheer Leader & Magician figs in full, as well as other new business card designs showing existing minifigs.
When these are released, I can foresee we'll need something here on Brickset to enable us all to swap them and complete our collections.
We're getting reports that LEGO have started sending these out to select individuals (I haven't been sent any yet) and you may have seen reviews and pictures of them.
However one fact has come to light this week that I haven't seen mentioned elsewhere (although I may have missed it), is that you CAN identify which figure is in the bag before you buy and open it.... but not if you're human. Apparently the bags have two barcodes on them: the normal EAN/UPC barcode used to identify the product and another, smaller one, which does not have a human-readable number under it, and which differs depending on content. (Update: here's a picture of the back of the packaging)
Unless you have a barcode reader, or someone clever comes up with an iPhone app to decode it, what practical use before purchase this will be remains to be seen. However it should be a help when opening a case of them if you want to determine how many different ones you have before opening packets, by comparing barcode patterns.
We also hear that the figs have a 'Chinese feel' to them, i.e. they are not quite up to Danish standards, but I guess that is to be expected.

hese are now becoming available in a lot more places: Steve in Australia [1] says they are now in Toyworld stores in Australia and Lenz in Austria picked them up at TRU near Vienna.
I've now received two complete boxes (thanks Rhys!). Yesterday I wrote about what I thought was the make-up of the boxes, but new information, plus a couple of barcode-reading errors on my part, meant it was inaccurate. The consensus seems to be that every box contains the same selection and having double checked my box last night, I now agree that the contents are as follows:
Indian 3, Cheerleader 3, Caveman 4, Clown 3, Zombie 3, Skater 3, Robot 4, Dummy 5, Magician 4, Wrestler 3, Nurse 3, Ninja 5, Astronaut 4, Archer 4, Diver 5, Cowboy 4
The collectable Minifigures are now available through LEGO's on-line Shop, throughout Europe, Australia and New Zealand. Unfortunately they are still not available to US & Canadian Lego fans.
We've also been told that they are finally available from the Brand Stores in the UK, although we've heard that there may be some rationing due to demand. Please post your experiences & let us know how you get on!
