Website update.

Postby xzanfr » Tue Mar 27, 2012 3:57 pm

We are currently updating the website to refresh the look and add in some new features.
This will take a few days and during that time you may notice strange things coming and going as well as the website occasionally slowing down or being offline for a brief time.

Thanks for your patience while this alteration is being carried out.

Looks like we've lost the "see new posts" / "active topics". I'd recommend making sure you include that in the up grades.

Oh I differ and you do suspect wrong there !! I dislike when friendly/good members are upset with us or BH.

You know Xzanfr is really working hard to improve the site and have a much better an clearer BH. I know the lack of button is annoying (to say the least) but I'm sure you'll love the new site, so please bear with us a little longer ;) .

The new template is pretty much there however I've put the buttons back on this template for the time being for those that used them.
Apologies for the inconvenience. :)

I'll be doing a bit of fiddling about with the template over the next few days so some things may look a bit weird!

We have recently updated the forum software and thought it would be a good idea to also update the graphics and try to improve operation of the board.
Below is an oultine of the changes and how to use them:

1. Graphics / theme.

We've gone for a more minimal them than before that emphasises the posts. We appreciate that it is a question of tase and hopefully you'll like using it too :)

2. Picture resizing.

Any pictures greater than 640 on their largest axis will now be reduced down to 640. To view the whole picture simply click it.
This function uses javascript so if for whatever reason you are not using it then the pictures will appear at thier origonal size. The forum software still loads the full size image prior to resizing so it would be very helpful to keep the pics around 600 - 800 to keep things sppedy and to help those without java.

3.a BB code.
We have introduced a couple of new codes for posting that appear at the top of the posting box:
(c) This centrally justifies the text of the post. to use simply put the text, picture etc withing the tags and it will be centralised:
Useage:
Code: Select all
 [c] text or picture [/c]

Result:
text or picture

(youtube)

This puts a youtube video within your post by copying the entire url of the video in to the tags.
Useage:
Code: Select all
 [youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0aGLzfZ3HJU[/youtube]

Result:

Portal / frontpage.
The frontpage is now an integeral part of the forum rather than a stand alone page. To access it click the link portal below the banner and to the left of "board".
Links.
The website (http://www.brickhorizon.com) will shortly be directed to the new frontpage / portal - (we didn't come up with the name ;) :D) )
In the unlikley event that anyone linked to the old frontpage ( ;) ) then it will still function for a few days before we redirect it to the portal.
Direct links to the board are unaffected.

There is not really much else we can do regarding the forum and portal until we have all used it for a while to see where the issues lie. During the next few weeks we may be altering the operation and look of a few things until we acheive a happy balance.
Please feel free to comment if there is a glaring issue or something you really don't like and we'll have a go at sorting it :)
In the end we're after a board that is easier to use and less clunky for the majority of users - some people will like things that others dislike and, as you will appreciate, it's all a question of balancing peoples needs with what is reasonably possible :)

Thanks to all of you for your help and patience thorughot this process :)

You can deeplink any size picture you want. The site now resizes everything to 640 x 480, however if you click the picture then it enlarges to fit your screen. We can control the dimensions of the resized pictures so if people want it to show larger ones in the future then it can be changed.

The resizing modification uses java which some people do not have. The site also loads the full size picture then resizes it so it is a good idea not to go super large. Again, if any of this becomes an issue then we will look in to sorting something else out.

That sounds fine. I normally shoot my pics 800x600, so not really much bigger and they will now not get chopped by the board. :D
